The monument has always been something “imposed” from above, showing the people which values they were expected to follow. This project develops as a photographic archive that, by reflecting on the contemporary relevance of monuments, seeks to reverse that direction. I walk through cities with a small red step ladder, asking people I meet to take part in the project and to “perform” their own idea of a monument. Participants not only express the idea they want to convey, but also choose the location for the photograph and the title of their personal “sculpture.”
The photographs documenting these performances each represent an idea, a value, a memory — and thus a kind of study — on the concept of the monument, on form, on color, and on all the aesthetic and ethical values that constitute it.
